Monthly Data Transfer (Bandwidth Usage) |
Data transfer or bandwidth usage is measured over a specified time and refers to the amount of data/information sent to or received from your hosting account on the server. |
Each time someone views one of your web pages, all of the data (text, graphics, code, etc.) within that page is transferred from the web server, across the Internet, to the visitor's computer for viewing on their web browser. The amount of data transfer a hosting customer uses is related to the numbers of visitors viewing their site, multiplied by the size of their web pages, included graphics, multimedia and other files. |
The bandwidth usage of sites that for example distribute graphics or provide large file downloads may be up to a hundred times more than that of someone running a personal web site. Although it's difficult to estimate how much data transfer a site will use, the following table shows the conversion units involved, while the formula can be used as a rough guide to estimate potential requirements: |
Conversion Units
One kilobyte (KB) = 1,024 bytes
One megabyte (MB) = 1,024 kilobytes
One gigabyte (GB) = 1,024 megabytes
One terabyte (TB) = 1,024 gigabytes |
Formula |
1) Calculate the average size of your web pages
2) Calculate the size of any graphics included
3) Add 1 and 2 together
4) Multiply 3 by the number of visitors you expect each day
5) Multiply 4 by the number of pages each visitor will view
6) Multiply 5 by the number of days in a month |
The answer at 6 will provide a rough estimate of how much bandwidth you are likely to need.

Should you find you need to increase your monthly data usage allowance at any time, you can upgrade to a larger plan, order additional bandwidth, or select from a range of additional features (see the "Upgrades" page of the ShinyHost web site) by emailing sales@shinyhost.com stating your requirements. We will then setup and activate your new plan and/or additions and alter your debit payments to reflect the changes made.
