What is Bandwidth Usage or Data Transfer?
Bandwidth Usage or Data Transfer is the amount of "data" that is transferred across the Internet to or from your account. For example if you have 10 MB of data available on your site and have 100 visitors access all 10 MB (html, graphics, etc.) you would use approximately 1GB (gigabyte i.e. 1000MB) of bandwidth. Data transfer restrictions are imposed by all reputable hosting companies in order to control bandwidth usage and ensure a high service standards.
Go Back
How do I know how much bandwidth (data transfer) my site has used?
This can be monitored via your control panel. The data transfer allowances on ShinyHost's Hosting Plans are among the industry's highest. Should you exceed your data transfer allowance, you will be charged for the extra bandwidth usage at the current applicable rate and will be asked to upgrade your Web Hosting Plan. The upside to exceeding your bandwidth allowance is that this normally demonstrates a busy site.

No, your account will not suffer any loss of service. You will be charged for the extra bandwidth usage at the current applicable rate and will be asked to upgrade your Web Hosting Plan.

Domains
What is a domain name?
A domain name is really just an alias for your IP number address. When you sign up to put a Web site on the Internet, you are given an Internet Protocol Number, or address. All the computers on the Internet can retrieve your site by pulling up this IP number. A domain name will allow you to have a World Wide Web address like www.yourcompany.com instead of having only a number such as 209.103.204.100.

What is a NIC handle and how do I read the NIC whois record?
Here is a sample NIC record:
  Bob's Web Company. (BOBSWEB-DOM)

  Any City, CA 123456
  US
  Domain Name: BOBSWEB.COM

  Anderson, Mike (SB123) dexin@BOBSWEB.COM

  Technical Contact, Zone Contact:
  Person, Tech (TP456) noc@anynet.net
  987-654-3210 (FAX)987-654-0123
  Record last updated on 15-Jun-05

DNS IP #1: 205.67.132.32

DNS Server #2: NS2.ANYNET.NET

DNS IP #2: 205.67.132.33
The three character strings, BOBSWEB-DOM, SB123, and TP456 are called NIC handles. They are basically key words used by NIC's whois database search software for locating information related to them quickly.
NIC's definitions for Administrative Contact and Technical Contact/Zone Contact, are as follows:
The administrative contact is the person who can speak on behalf of the organization listed in Section 3. This person should be able to answer non-technical questions about the organization's plans for the name, and procedures for establishing sub-domains, and should be able to represent the organization regarding use of the name.
The technical contact is the person who tends to the technical aspects of maintaining the domain's name server, resolver software, and database files. This person keeps the name server running, and interacts with technical people in other domains to solve problems that affect the domain. The Internet Service Provider often performs this role.
